Qanats and orchards

Qanats

The first and most significant fact  for the settlement of the settled man are the resources of current water, exploitation of the potentiality of these resources to construct cities and Suburbs and establishment of devices to hold out the overflow of rivers, floods and its destruction. The technology of establishing water channels (Qanat) in Central desert areas of Iran from the very far past has been based on two common methods of utilizing underground water; Meybod with the expansive Qanat network is the highest point in such activities. The source of most of its Qanats is located at The Heights of Shirkooh (Lion Mountain), each of which boils out from the ground in a specific area. For instance, the Sare Hoze Bazar (the source of Kharzar Qanat) is where Karenan Qanat flows 10 miters under the ground and continues until Somewhere in Mehrjard it boils out of the ground. Thus the slopes of water canals which follow in the depths of ground are set in a way that the water will follow in its natural bed as long as possible and only will boil out where it is needed. The four important Qanats of “Kharjar”, “Kasnava”, Ghotb abad” and “Sadr abad” in paen Quarter and Koochok quarter of Sharestan have found their way to the surface of the ground and provide the water of the houses and their orchards. The higher quarter reach these underground sources by digging Godal-baghcheh (garden ditches) and footsteps.

orchards

Orchards are the second factors of providing the possibility of living in the waterless plane of the dessert whose existence depends on water sources. In the Urban structure of Maybod, The orchards are inseparable elements of other parts without which the ecological and biological life of the structure will be severely threatened. Moreover, the intensity of The Orchards and groups and their relationship with their economical and urban life of the quarters are undeniable. These Orchards endow the Towns with security and life. Unlike other cities where The Orchards are private, in Meybod these Orchards are public and are linked with human life to the point one can claim that the whole warps and woofs of the city is green. The spaces between ecological zones (like the spaces between Sharestan and the outskirts) are filled with green spots of the orchards and groves. These elements together, form the green city of Meybod. This vast green arrow in the middle of the dry desert, that sounds it, is formed throughout years. In the past with the growth of the population and the expansion of the Living areas, the orchards also flourished. Thus, the Orchards are inseparable element in establishment expansion and growth of Meybod. Since to provide water for irrigation is very difficult, the Orchards and fields have been divided into smaller units and, according to the current of the Qanat and canals, are arranged so that water will flow across the land and fields. In this way, by occupying the least and shortest length, the farmers could irrigate the Orchard and fields. Famous grapes and pomegranates of Meybod are the main products of this interaction between Man and nature. The ponds, bath houses, mills and cisterns are architectural elements which are constructed directly in relationship with the water of Qanat.
